We all want a cozy office to dive into that’s both inspiring and functional. But as you scroll Pinterest, you might start to think that’s awfully expensive. I have good news though! You can create a budget friendly home office that doesn’t break the bank. With a little savvy shopping and creativity, you’ll find yourself walking into a space you love to work in.

Here are some budget-friendly tips to help you get started.

1. Shop Your Home

In this blog post, I discussed how to make not-so-ideal desk spaces more cozy and practical. In that post, I talked about using a tv tray table as my desk setup in the living room. When we’re working on a budget, we don’t always get to start off with the best items.

There’s often items around your home that you can repurpose for you home office to save you some funds. An unused side table could double as a desk, or a decorative basket might become stylish storage for office supplies.

2. Declutter and Organize

Maybe you’re not starting your home office from scratch. Perhaps you feel it’s time for a refresh and you’re looking for ways to accomplish that on a budget.

Sometimes, a good decluttering session is all you need to make your workspace feel refreshed. Use inexpensive organizers, like jars or small bins, to tidy up your desk and keep essentials within reach.

3. DIY Your Décor

Whether you’re starting from scratch or your office just needs a refresh, there still might be things that you want to make your office feel more like you. But when we’re working to create a budget friendly home office, we can’t always pop around to Walmart (or insert your local supermarket) and buy exactly what we want.

This is where DIY enters the chat!

Last year, I really wanted to give my closet office a pop of color to brighten things up. I didn’t have the money to buy all new art for the walls. So, instead, I went to Pinterest and found all sorts of lovely art and printed up a ton of 4×6 pictures, and hung them with some colorful washi tape. It gave the space an entirely new feel!

Get creative and make your own office décor! Frame inspirational quotes, paint old picture frames, or craft a simple bulletin board with fabric and cork. DIY projects are a cost-effective way to personalize your space. Check out these 15 ideas!

4. Rearrange Your Layout

This one is a tip for those of you going for a refresh. Maybe you decluttered and it still isn’t getting the job done. Perhaps now it’s time to rethink your office layout!

Sometimes a simple rearrangement of your furniture can make your space feel brand new. Experiment with different layouts to find one that works best for you and maximizes light and flow.

5. Use Affordable Lighting Solutions

Lighting can completely change the feel of your home office. Pick up a budget-friendly desk lamp or string lights to add warmth and coziness to your space. Check thrift stores or online marketplaces for affordable options.

6. Thrift and Secondhand Finds

I LOVE thrift stores. And yard sales. And flea markets. Some of my favorite items have come from these places. Want to re-do your whole office mega cheap? These are the places to check. I guarantee it’ll be a fraction of the cost of buying new.

And the great thing is that you’re giving these items new life, new purpose.

These places can be treasure troves for unique and budget-friendly office furniture or décor. Look for desks, chairs, or storage solutions that you can upcycle or refresh.

7. Invest in Key Pieces

If you’re going to splurge, do it wisely. A comfortable chair or an ergonomic desk accessory can improve your productivity and health in the long run. Look for sales or buy used to save money.

8. Add Personal Touches

There’s nothing like making your space your own. Once you have the basics, bring some personal items into the mix to make your space feel lively and inspiring.

Display meaningful items like family photos, mementos, or a favorite piece of artwork. These little details can make all the difference in your creativity.
